Fashion Update: Cheap Thrills at Forever 21

Floral Zip Up Dress, Forever 21, $22.80

While I may be a few years older than 21, my seniority doesn’t keep me from cherishing the cheap yet chic finds at Forever 21. Friends are often surprised that I find so many great pieces there, but I’m not. Crammed full of racks dedicated to each and every trend of the moment, plus an array of inexpensive accessories, a trip to Forever 21 can be hit or miss, but it’s definitely worth the occasional visit.

Case and Point: A recent shopping spree generated three cute dresses, a fantastic fall coat and new handbag for $138.80, with none of the five pieces more than $32.80.  Before the new Forever 21 opens on Newbury Street, my store of choice is the one inside the Arsenal Mall in Watertown.  With two floors and a fab accessories room, there’s a lot of merchandise to choose from.  Savvy tip: If you hate crowds, go early on the weekends, or a weeknight evening.

Coral Military-Inspired Pea Coat, Forever 21, $32.80

My first pick was this outrageously adorable coral fall coat with big, gold military-inspired buttons.  At $32.80, it was easy to snap up this statement piece, which is perfect for my long weekend walks around town.  Unfortunately, I was unable to track down this coat on Forever 21’s website, but the style number is 77123563032.  The coat runs true to size.

After, I scooped up three stylish dresses, each with a floral design and front zippers.  The first, pictured at the beginning of this blog entry, was a big hit during my recent trip to California, where the temperatures were in the 80s.  However, I’m convinced that with sheer navy tights and a long cardigan sweater, I can bring this summery dress into the fall season.  At $22.80, this dress was the only one that I could find on the Forever 21.com website (click here).

The other two dresses I bought translate with ease into the fall season.  The first (pictured right), is eye-catching with vibrant hues of blue, green and yellow.  Flatteringly cinched with an empire waist, I also have dreams of dressing this frock up or down, depending on the occasion.  The dress was $24.80 and the style number is 76806363012, as it is also no longer listed on the Forever 21.com site.

The third and final dress I purchased is the most sophisticated. With a unique pattern of mauves, blues and lavenders reminiscent of an artist’s paint brush strokes, the dress’s ladylike elegance is modernized with a slightly exaggerated hip/pocket area.  I envision this dress with

sheer navy tights, booties and a fitted blazer to bring more of an urban feel to this girlie frock.  I was unable to find a link to this dress on Forever 21.com, but the style number is 78331777012.

Last, but certainly not least from my Forever 21 shopping spree was a classic large taupe handbag with bronze chain detailing along the handle and body of the bag.  Incredibly versatile, this bag can be paired with a variety of outfits, yet is large enough to carry around the massive amount of “stuff” that tends to travel with me as I walk through the city.  At $28.80, it was more expensive than all of the dresses I purchased, but it’s still a steal when you consider how much designer handbag companies command for a single purse or tote.  Unfortunately, my luck with Forever 21.com continued with this handbag, as it is only available online in brown, not taupe (click here).

Twist of Fate Taupe Handbag, Forever 21, $28.80

Not too bad for just an hour or so of shopping!  Forever 21 is located inside the Arsenal Mall at 485 Arsenal St # 37 in Watertown, MA.  Phone number is (617) 923-470 and Forever 21 is open Mon-Sat 10:00 a.m.-9:30 p.m.; Sun 11:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.  Happy Shopping!

The Work Week in Boston: Monday, September 27 – Thursday, September 30

The Swapaholics Boston - Fashion Week Sip & Swap

Time flies when you’re having fun, right?  The weekend may have passed in the blink of an eye, but Boston is once again keeping the work week interesting.  In addition to nightly events for Boston Fashion Week, there’s networking with Boston World Partnerships and a lively night of belly dancing at The Beehive competing for your presence this week.

Monday, September 27 – Closet Couture at the W Hotel
Ever open your closet only to declare that you have nothing to wear? Happens to me frequently while playing the “outfit game” before work. Whether you’re seeking a fab find or a fun night out, head to the W Hotel on Monday night from 8:00 – 10:00 p.m. for a fashion show featuring both high and low end pieces from Second Time Around.  An after-party with Stuff Magazine and a Second Time Around Pop-Up store kicks off immediately following the fashion show at 10:00 p.m. Admission is free and the event is 21+.

The Weekend: September 25-26

Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival

Now that it’s officially fall, I’m treating every final burst of warm weather as if it could be our last.  With temperatures on Saturday expected in the mid-80s and Sunday near 70, it’s a great weekend to get out and enjoy Boston. This weekend, free fun is the name of the game, especially when it comes to art and music. In addition to free entry at several of the city’s top museums on Saturday, there are a few amazing (and free) concerts to enjoy throughout the weekend.

Here are my top picks for events this Saturday and Sunday:

Saturday, September 25

Free Jazz Fest in the South End
From noon to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, follow the sweet sounds of live jazz to Mass. Ave and Columbus Ave. in the South End for the tenth annual Berklee BeanTown Jazz Festival. Serving as the grand finale to a series of events and performances that have been happening throughout the city since September 15, this all-day, outdoor festival features three stages with great performers, including Al Kooper and the Funky Faculty, the Jonathan Batiste Trio, and more.  For a full schedule of today’s events, please click here.

Friday, July 30: MFA Hosts Free Community Day

MFA Boston by Lilbenne from Flickr

On Friday, July 30, the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) is opening its doors to the general public by hosting a free community day.  From 10:00 a.m. through 9:45 p.m, it doesn’t matter whether you’re a frequent visitor, or haven’t stepped inside the Museum in ages, because general admission is gratis courtesy of the Highland Street Foundation.

With ten exhibitions and seven guided tours available at various times during the day, visitors can decide whether they prefer to wander on their own and play art critic, versus tapping into the wisdom of a Museum-trained guide.  Also not to be missed is the current visiting masterpiece,  Vincent van Gogh’s The Sower.

While there are tons of family-friendly activities during the day, visitors over 21 can also enjoy alfresco cocktails and live music in the Museum’s Calderwood Courtyard from 5:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

The South End Buttery: The Little Cafe That Could (and Does!)

South End Buttery by Don’t Wake Me, I Plan On Sleeping from Flickr

Casually cool with amazing sandwiches and pastries, the South End Buttery is exactly the kind of place you want to live within walking distance of.  Tucked into a quaint area of the South End filled with posh brownstone walk-ups and hip furniture stores, this neighborhood gem is open from 6:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily, allowing ample opportunity to satisfy cravings on a whim.

Upon entry to the restaurant, step into the bustling cafe space with cheerful yellow walls and a display case filled with pastries worth salivating over.  Though there are two quieter rooms, I prefer sitting in the main room, which gets fantastic natural light and presents a constant stream of Bostonians for people watching.  On a nice day, try and snag a seat on the tiny outdoor patio, which is pet-friendly.

While I’ve never been for dinner, I have tried – and loved – their plain croissant, pecan sticky bun and seven layer bar.  Their iced coffee is lovely, but fair warning – the large size is huge!  The sandwiches are truly the star of the show here, especially the Curried Chicken Salad, which is worth every deliciously messy bite.

Though the South End Buttery has many high points, I wish that they also made their salads to order instead of having them available at the takeaway counter.  I’m guessing that this is only a lunchtime issue, but after seeing the delicious made to order sandwiches arrive at our table, I would have swooned over a more innovative salad menu.

The South End Buttery is located at 314 Shawmut Avenue at the corner of Union Park in the South End.  For more information, please visit their website: www.southendbuttery.com
