Cocktail: Beehive Julep

IMG_0137Although this cocktail is no longer on the menu at The Beehive, I’m going to let you in on a little secret. You can still order it! Called the Beehive Julep, it contains with rum, clementine liqueur, OJ, muddled mint, orange, and limes and ice. The end result is slightly sweet, refreshing and a touch tart. It’s been a favorite for years.

Want to make one at home? Here’s the recipe. Want to try it from the experts? Visit the Beehive, located at 541 Tremont Street, in Boston’s South End. Definitely try to go on a night when there’s live jazz as well – you won’t be disappointed!

On The Town: Drinks at Clio

IMG_4664I’ll let you in on a little secret – Clio has some of the best bartenders in the city. Ok, so perhaps that’s not so much a secret as it is the truth. Clio is one of my go-to’s when I want to catch up with a good friend during the week (weekends tend to be too busy). Tucked inside the Eliot Hotel in the Back Bay, the space is small, but well-appointed.  There’s a massive drink menu to read through, or you can turn to one of the friendly bartenders. Simply describe your favorite flavors, spirits, etc. and they will make you a personalized cocktail. And by personalized, don’t be surprised if you see ice cubes made of beets or honeydew melon, or a random tool procured to muddle or torch various ingredients right in front of you.

Although I’ve enjoyed many different drinks at Clio, I do adore the Pimms Cocktail. It’s refreshing, has fresh fruit and instantly transports me to a tropical beach. Which, as we’ve seen with this terrible weather, is a gift in itself!

Clio is located at the corner of Massachusetts Ave and Commonwealth Ave. inside the Eliot Hotel in Boston’s Back Bay.

On The Town: #DuckieRose at Highball Lounge

IMG_4873If you haven’t been to Highball Lounge yet – you should! Tucked inside the Nine Zero Hotel (a Kimpton property) on Tremont Street, Highball Lounge is the perfect mix of upscale and good old fashioned fun. The interior is upscale yet cozy, with modern features and a mix of classic games like Jenga, Connect Four, Uno and Twister. The theme also extends to the food and drink menus, from classic highball cocktails, to the adorable #DuckieRose, a blended wine cocktail which comes complete with a mini rubber duckie! If you’re feeling especially naughty, try the tater tot nachos. They are just as delicious and decadent as they sound!

Highball Lounge is located at 90 Tremont Street in Boston, MA.

A Forgotten Snapshot: Boston Harbor Hotel Summer 2012

Snapped July 2012

Snapped July 2012

Ever scroll through old photos on your computer only to discover a gem that you didn’t share? One look at this photo of the Boston Harbor Hotel during July 2012 had me nostalgic for Boston in the summer. On this particular night, I had treated my good friend Jake to a birthday dinner at LTK in the Seaport district and then went to meet friends by the Boston Harbor Hotel. In the summer the hotel has a variety of events, including live jazz and movies. On this particular evening, they were playing An American in Paris on a massive screen behind the hotel. It was one of those lovely warm summer nights and people were crowded around, sipping wine and relaxing. I turned around and saw what would end up being this photo.

Now that the weather is cold and we’re bundled up in layers, looking at this photo reminds me of good friends, warm summer nights and the hope that we’ll be back there soon.

On The Town: Pumpkin Beer with a Pumpkin Spiced Rim – Pour House

‘Tis the season for all things pumpkin. Though my passion for pumpkin flavored coffee, baked goods and savory recipes is not limited to the fall, it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of these special limited time items. Case and point – pumpkin beer! Recently, I met my dear friend Betsy, who was back in town visiting after (envious) jaunts in London and Hawaii, for a drink at the Pour House on Boylston Street in Boston’s Back Bay. Definitely more of a beer place (in my mind, anyway), so I had my sights set on a very pumpkin-y flavored beer. I went for the UFO Pumpkin on tap and much to my delight, the waitress asked if I would like a pumpkin spiced rim to go with. Ummm…yeah!? The rim was a lot of fun and really added to the pumpkin beer experience. Sure, a little messy, but 100 percent worth it.

The great thing about pumpkin beer with a spiced rim is that you can easily replicate it at home. After a quick google search, I stumbled upon a super quick pumpkin spice and brown sugar rim recipe from a cute blog called Small Kitchen College.

Join me in raising your glass to all things pumpkin!

The Pour House is located at 907 Boylston Street in Boston’s Back Bay.
