Last Minute Halloween Costume Inspiration For The Twentysomething Set

Smiley Pumpkin by minipixel from Flickr

Each year I struggle with ideas for my Halloween costume.  Infact, I have a bad habit of repeating costumes year over year, especially if I am going to a party with different people.  So, to help my fellow procrastinating Bostonians, here a few of my favorite ideas:

1) Referee — Party fouls can happen to good people, and its up to the referee to call them out.  Head to the nearest Sports Authority (call before you go to make sure they have ’em) and snag a men’s referee jersey for under $30.  A men’s small fit me perfectly.  From there, a black skirt or shorts, plus knee high socks, a whistle, a red or yellow penalty flag (scarf), and sneakers complete the look.

2) Cowgirl — A traditional cowgirl costume isn’t that exciting, so here are two suggestions on how to be racy without actually wearing less.  First, a little personalization can go a long way.  One year I bought iron on letters from AC Moore and spelled out the phrase, “Save a horse, ride a [your name here]” on a plain t-shirt.  It’s a play on Big & Rich’s song, “Save a horse, ride a cowboy,” and I got a lot of laughs that night.

For those really looking to make a statement, what about being a reverse cowgirl?  If you don’t understand what a reverse cowgirl is, then this probably isn’t the costume for you.  All you have to do is wear a traditional cowgirl costume backwards.  A good friend of mine wore this costume one year, and it was very successful.

3) XOXO, Gossip Girl — Have an on-again-off-again BFF?  Want to dress in fabulous outfits for an evening while technically being ‘in costume’?  I’ve always thought that dressing as Serena and Blair from Gossip Girl would be a lot of fun, and super easy.  Serena’s style is more urban/trendy, while Blair’s is more buttoned up/traditional.  If you and your bestie are already blonde and brunette, it may be fun to buy wigs and play against character.

4) 80s Workout Babe — American Apparel seems to be stuck in an 80s moment, making this a top spot to wow your friends with short shorts, sweatbands, knee high socks in a variety of fun colors.  Add over-teased “big hair” and you will be sweatin’ in style all night long.

5) Flapper — This is my costume this year.  I don’t enjoy costume store ensembles, so I struck 1920s gold at 344 on Newbury Street (also in the Pru) with a black on black fringe/sequined dress.  Granted, it was more than I would normally spend on Halloween, but since I tend to wear the same costumes a few years in a row, I’m considering this an investment piece.  Combined with things I already have at home – pearls, red lipstick, tights, and a $2 headband from Forever21, and I’m ready to twirl around all night in my cute dress.

If all else fails, here are a few great stores to shop at for costume inspiration – Forever 21 has a lot of rocker-inspired gear – think shiny black leggings, silver, gold, faux leather biker jackets.  Forever 21 also has lots of flannel, woodswoman style prints.  Sporting good stores are also a great place to cash in on team jerseys.  Army/Navy stores are the place to go for official apparel, and when all else fails, I heart AC Moore for t-shirts and sweaters, puffy paint, iron on letters, in every color of the rainbow.

Happy Halloween!! xoxo, SavvyBostonian

Sweat Stylishly on a Pink Treadmill at BodyScapes and Log Miles For the Ellie Fund

If you’re anything like me, you log a few hours each week at the gym in the name of health, fitness, and skinny jeans.  Wouldn’t it be great if you could use that time to give back to a worthwhile cause as well?

PUMA Sneaker by Jessica Gioglio

BodyScapes Fitness, with locations in Brookline and Southborough, is teaming up with Cybex and the Ellie Fund to work up a sweat in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Members and non-members alike can visit a BodyScapes location during the month of October and log miles on the Cybex pink treadmill.  If you’re a non-member, you will be given a free day pass to the gym.

Cute, right?  Well it gets better.  For each mile logged on the pink treadmill, BodyScapes will donate $1 to The Ellie Fund.  According to a press release from the Ellie Fund, a BodyScapes member who chooses to remain anonymous will match each dollar raised at the Brookline location.  At the end of October, BodyScapes Fitness will continue supporting The Ellie Fund by donating five cents for every mile logged for the entire year.

Love to see a local company going the distance in the name of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Sexy Meets Sporty: Victoria Secret’s PINK Line Launches MLB Collection

One would think that a partnership between Victoria Secret’s PINK line and MLB would result in a collection of sporty knickers.  However, this collaboration seems to be starting small (and dreaming big?) with sweats and tees for six major league teams: Cubs, Mets, Phillies, Red Sox, White Sox and Yankees.  The items are cute, look very comfortable, and stick mostly to team colors.  However, there is one screaming hot pink Mets sweatpants/hoodie combo.  Perfect for the girl who likes to stand out from the crowd, right?

While I’m certain that this will be extremely popular with PINK’s target demographic, several critics argue that female baseball fans already have a multitude of apparel options at their disposal.  They also question why Victoria Secret has the number 86 on most pieces of clothing, citing Boston’s infamous “Curse of the Bambino.”  In reviewing the overall PINK collection, it appears that Victoria Secret consistently uses the number 86 throughout the PINK line.

As a brand marketing enthusiast, I can’t help but wonder if Victoria Secret should have left the number 86 off of its MLB team apparel line.  When it comes to sports, numbers on apparel will always have an added significance, from player numbers, to the year a team was founded, etc.  I’m sure if Victoria Secret conducted a focus group, women would say that they’re not buying their MLB team apparel line because of the number 86, but because it’s cute, comfortable, and bears the name of their favorite team.

Bottom line – will this impact sales?  Probably not, except in the case of a die-hard sports fan.  As for their critics, I’d argue that women enjoy having options.  We frequently look at our closets full of clothes and say, “I have nothing to wear.”  Well, now we have a few more cute, sporty options.

Fashion Update: Wrentham Outlets

About forty minutes outside of Boston, Wrentham is a great day trip to take every few months.  Recently, I stopped in to search for a few last-minute winter purchases before the outlets go full-throttle into spring apparel.

Looking for black pointy-toed boots, I scored a great mid-calf pair at Nine West for $35!  They also had knee-high ones for $50 (about a 2 inch heel).  Off Sak’s had tons of Joe’s jeans, Theory had great basics on sale, and J.Crew made me want to jump headfirst into spring with it’s cheerful, preppy selections.

Quite possibly the most impressive of the day was the Coach outlet.  There were so many high-quality leather bags in great colors from tan, black, white, periwinkle blue, and sage green.  Similarly colored wristlets were super cheap, and passport holders, CD cases, mini travel pill cases, were all on sale (and make great gifts).

Outlets to skip included the GAP, Banana Replublic, Bebe and Arden B- they definitely need a refresher!

SavvyBostonian Tips:

  • Sign up for Wrentham’s VIP club online before you go!  It’s free, and you can print up a voucher for a discount book to redeem at the office when you arrive (next to food court, near off Sak’s/Barney’s end).
  • Grab your java fix at Dunkin Donuts on the way in- the coffee inside the outlets is not good!
  • As far as I know, bathrooms are on opposite ends- so is the best parking.
  • Get there early to avoid large crowds.
