I often mention the Christian Science Plaza and get a, “Huh? Where?” type response from fellow Bostonians. Regardless of your interest in the Christian Science religion (the massive building is the church’s Global HQ, built in 1894 and expanded in 1906), the scenic plaza, surrounding reflecting pool and fountain in the summer make it a fun place for a stroll.
The plaza is located in the Back Bay, adjacent to the Dalton Street and Huntington Ave entrance to the Prudential Center. It can also be accessed from Massachusetts (Mass) Ave. between Clearway Street and Huntington Ave.
During the summer, expect droves of excited children playing in between the fountain’s water streams.
While it’s accepted and encouraged to play in the fountain, the same does not go for the massive reflecting pool. And unfortunately, the ample nearby attendants will make sure that nobody attempts to jump in (or so I’ve heard from more daring friends).
Venture further around the plaza and you’ll find a large green space, perfect for a picnic, or enjoying a mid-day ice cream. The plaza also has an array of tables and chairs that are sometimes available for using.
To round out the stroll, you also might want to consider a stop into the Mapparium. For more information on the Christian Science Plaza, grounds and available tours, click here.
