BOSTON, EVENTS

Photos From The Boston Marathon

photo 3On Monday night, I walked into my apartment with a big smile on my face following a wonderful Boston Marathon. Whether you watched the race on TV, followed along on social media, or were lucky enough to stake out a spot along the course, the spirit of the Boston Marathon was contagious.

Like many Bostonians, the tragic events of the 2013 Boston Marathon hit close to home – literally. Having just returned home from the Boylston Street area, I heard the explosions from my apartment and looked out my window to see smoke rising above the buildings and police officers on the street running toward the explosion sites. The days and events following will be something I’ll never forget.

This is precisely why I was so happy to see the city and Boston Marathon come back stronger than ever this year. Although I spent most of the day working from home, I was able to sneak out for a little to watch the men’s and women’s elite runners come by on Comm Ave. I had tried to walk over to Boylston Street, but it was impossible with the crowds and heightened security to get over there. Luckily, Comm Ave. offered a great vantage point right before the iconic home stretch. I ended up standing next to two women whose husbands were running and had run the year before. We ended up chatting for a bit and it was amazing to hear their stories and experiences from last year. I was touched by their passion to return this year.

In the evening, I continued what has been an annual tradition – a post-marathon dinner with my dear friend Jake. Jake and I met while volunteering and continues to help out annually. It’s so much fun to discuss and re-experience the major stories of the day.

For this Bostonian, that’s what the marathon was all about this year – honoring and remembering those impacted by the tragic events of 2013 while celebrating the city and runners coming back stronger than ever.
