Readers of this blog know just how much I adore traveling. I’m a big believer that travel is about the people, the places discovered and small moments enjoyed, so one can imagine just how many of those we had over the span of ten days from Reno, Nevada, to Tiburon, Mill Valley, San Francisco and wine country. Here I’ll share a few bits from Reno, Tiburon and Mill Valley. More on the rest of those in upcoming blog entries!
Our trip started in Reno, Nevada for a family wedding. I’ll be honest – I never expected Reno to be on my travel list, but we ended up having a wonderful time. We stayed at the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino, which absolutely met all of our needs from dining options, to a lovely pool, gym, spa, nightlife and (of course) casino. Not one to gamble, I spent some time out at the pool where we had a private cabana. This was not necessary, but offered a good central meeting place for a good group.
In classic casino hotel fashion, the food portions were insanely large. For example, in an effort to eat light, my mom and I ate at the diner style restaurant and ordered a yogurt parfait, a fruit salad and a side portion of scrambled eggs each. Imagine how much we laughed when this arrived. I think the yogurt bowl was larger than my head.
Should you ever find yourself in Reno, here’s a few helpful tips on the hotel:
- If you’re not great at walking long distances, or climbing stairs with heavy bags, really ask about the logistics to get to your room at check-in. They put me so far away with a small flight of stairs to climb. Luckily, I could manage a very heavy suitcase and a small flight of stairs, but not everyone can.
- The gym has free bottled water upon request, which was a nice perk, as they charge you for it in other parts of the hotel.
- The grab ‘n’ go salads at the coffee bars are actually quite good.
- The sandwiches at the NY deli are massive. Split one!
- The nightclub at the hotel was actually pretty fun – and there was no cover charge!
Following Reno, we drove from Nevada to San Rafael, California. It was actually a very scenic drive.
Once settled into our next hotel, we returned to an old favorite – Tiburon, California. There’s a wonderful path along the water that is perfect for a long walk. And, after food portions like the above, walking was more than necessary!
Later in the first leg of our Marin County stay, we ventured over to Mill Valley, California, a sleepy yet stylish town with great restaurants and cute boutiques to pop into. We enjoyed a lovely authentic Italian meal at Vasco and also spent some time scoping out the Mill Valley Inn for a future visit.
We also discovered this gem. If only the store had been open when we passed by!
