Did someone say cupcakes? No, I think they said curly cakes. Specifically, Isabelle’s Curly Cakes, the hip new cupcake shop in Beacon Hill that’s owned by celeb chef Todd English and daughter Isabelle. When my friend Ryan suggested that we stop in one Sunday, I couldn’t resist sampling a few cupcakes to see what the buzz was all about.
Located about halfway down Charles Street, you could easily blink and miss this tiny shop. Though small, the interior is nicely decorated, with a chocolate brown, pink and off white color scheme. The walls are adorned with photos of Isabelle, friends and family, and there are two small tables up for grabs.
Luckily, we went at a good time, snagging one of the two tables and immediately dove into our two cupcakes, one red velvet and one chocolate peanut butter cup. With both cupcakes, I was impressed with how rich and moist the cake was. The red velvet cupcake was very tasty with cream cheese frosting and a sprinkle of white chocolate shavings, but the chocolate peanut butter cupcake was star of our Sunday cupcake jaunt.
Featuring a double dose of peanut butter, the chocolate peanut butter cupcake boasted a heavenly peanut butter scented frosting and surprise burst of peanut butter inside the cake. The avid baker in me is dying to know Isabelle’s secret, because the peanut butter wasn’t overpowering in either the frosting, or the interior of the cupcake.
All in all, I would definitely visit Isabelle’s Curly Cakes again. It’s just far enough away from where I live to make it a special occasion place, which is a good thing. I don’t have what you call willpower when it comes to sweets, so logging a nice walk before a treat is always a good thing. For those that don’t want to walk, they do deliver, so check out their website for more details.
You know what else would be nice? If Isabelle’s Curly Cakes made mini cupcakes! Pretty please, with peanut butter frosting on top? Isabelle’s Curly Cakes is located at 81 Charles Street in Beacon Hill.
